Press release - Trimble

Technology 'Crucial to Reducing Fatalities' on Britain's Roads

Release date: 25.11.10
During Road Safety Week Trimble is supporting the UK’s leading road safety charity, Brake, in its call for fleets to be fitted with telematics technology to reduce the number of accidents on our roads.

Recognising that driver safety is now at the top of the list for many businesses, Trimble and Brake have joined together to create a campaign, calling on CEOs and other senior management to test their own driving style, receiving free Trimble hardware in their vehicle which will monitor their driver style and provide them with a safety assessment to see just how well they fare out on the road.

Brake believes that such technology, already in use in the commercial sector, should be used to help companies ensure they are doing everything possible to understand and manage the issue of road risk.

Brake’s Road Safety Week campaign, which began on November 22 calls for telematics to be more widely implemented to really take hold of health and safety with in businesses running fleets.

Trimble, one of the leading UK telematics companies has been quick to lend support to the campaign, following the release of its DriverSafety solution that helps businesses meet Brake’s goal of reducing crashes through better, safer driving.

Trimble MRM provides the country’s leading operators of vehicle fleets with solutions that now include a dashboard-mounted traffic light system that can be vital in helping drivers understand their driving behaviour and make changes.

The solution works by using sophisticated GPS know-how to track speeds against local speed limit and also monitors potentially dangerous driving manoeuvres, indicating to the driver through red, amber and green lights whether they are driving safely.

Trimble MRM launched DriverSafety to the commercial fleet sector in October.
“Our DriverSafety solution is popular with the commercial sector as many companies are becoming even more focused on operating their fleets safely and responsibly,” says Andrew Yeoman, MD of Trimble MRM.

“We believe our technology helps drivers handle their vehicles more safely and are proud to support Brake during Road Safety Week and look forward to working with them on this crucial area that needs both focus and improvement.”

“Vehicles driven for work are the highest-mileage on our roads, so their safety is paramount,” says Katie Shephard from the road safety charity, Brake. “Surveys show, due to the pressures of work, that fleet drivers are more likely than other drivers to admit to speeding, talking on a mobile phone and driving when tired, so management of driver safety by companies is vital.”
